Plannet Retrograde Effect in Stock Markets: Truth or Illusion?

From the most ancient times, the astrological beliefs have played an important role in human history, thinking, world-views, language and other elements of social culture. The practice of relating the movement of celestial bodies to events in financial markets is relatively newer but despite the inconsistency between financial astrology and standard economic or financial theory, it seems to be largely spread among capital market traders. This post evaluates one of the astrological effects on the Stock market, more precisely the Plannet retrograde effect on Indian market.

When a planet is retrograde, it appears to be standing still momentarily from the viewpoint of an observer situated on planet Earth. Although orbiting planets never stand still, when a planet is retrograde it is as if two vehicles are moving in the same direction and one vehicle passes the other. As the faster vehicle (faster orbiting planet) passes the slower vehicle (slower orbiting planet), for a brief moment in time it appears as though the slower vehicle (slower orbiting planet) is moving backwards. Of course it is not really moving backwards, the effect is purely illusory. Venus retrograde events (although not frequent) are often associated with significant market highs and lows. Traders and investors should be alert for significant price action on stocks when the planet Mercury is retrograde, makes sign changes or is conjunct to other planets. Jupiter Retrograde Events and Jupiter-Sun aspects From our vantage point here on Earth, we see Jupiter exhibit retrograde behaviour once a year or so and each of these retrograde periods lasts for about 3 ½ months.

Retrograde Motion

Retrograde motion of a planet occurs when a planet moves faster than another planet in its orbit. It appears that the planet is moving backward but, in fact, it is not. Major price changes may occur in commodity and stock prices very near these time periods.

  • Mercury retrograde conditions affect the grains and livestock,
  • Jupiter and Uranus in Retrograde  affect stock prices
  • Pluto retrograde has an effect on gold prices.
  • The Sun and Moon are never retrograde or stationary.
  • Mercury is retrograde 24 days and is stationary about one day before and after.
  • Venus is retrograde 42 days and is stationary two or three days before and after.”
  • Mars is retrograde for 80 days and is stationary two or three days before or after.
  • Jupiter is retrograde 120 days and is stationary about five days before and after. •
  • Mercury. Venus, Mars and Jupiter in retrograde motion have an effect on price action,
  • Why this occurs is unknown but the trader should be aware of those times.
