Circuit Limit for NIFTY

By | May 10, 2014 10:40 am

The index-based market-wide circuit breaker system applies at 3 stages of the index movement, either way viz. at 10%, 15% and 20%. These circuit breakers when triggered bring about a coordinated trading halt in all equity and equity derivative markets nationwide. The market-wide circuit breakers are triggered by movement of either the BSE Sensex or the NSE CNX Nifty, whichever is breached earlier.

The market shall re-open, after index based market-wide circuit filter breach, with a pre-open call auction session. The extent of duration of the market halt and pre-open session is as given below:

Trigger limit Trigger time Market halt duration Pre-open call auction session post market halt
10% Before 1:00 pm. 45 Minutes 15 Minutes
At or after 1:00 pm upto 2.30 pm 15 Minutes 15 Minutes
At or after 2.30 pm  No halt Not applicable
15% Before 1 pm 1 hour 45 minutes 15 Minutes
At or after 1:00 pm before 2:00 pm 45 Minutes 15 Minutes
On or after 2:00 pm Remainder of the day Not applicable
20% Any time during market hours Remainder of the day Not applicable

Exchange shall compute the Index circuit breaker limits for 10%, 15% and 20% levels on a daily basis based on the previous day’s closing level of the index rounded off to the nearest tick size.

    Thx Bramesh bhai….

but let me twist the question a bit more….

15th May Nifty is at 7000 … I buy 7500 CE for Rs 40 and on 16th Nifty hits an UC call is now 120Rs…. but as it is in circuit I cannot sell it….

Now, when the circuit opens, Nifty may fall or rise more… so chances of the CE going either 80 or 160 (rough calculation)….

So, if before the markets open… I put sell order @ 100 rs…whereas UC is 120 …will it get squared off ??? I mean in that 3-4 seconds when it hits the UC

    Bramesh bhai…i have a doubt since a long time…

Say on 15th May …Nifty is at 7044 and i think, we wont have a stable BJP govt in which case, nifty can crash to 6300 or below….but if things go either way, we can also head to 7700 or 8000 levels….

so, I buy Nifty 6300 PE @ 20 and 7700 CE @ 30 ….now BJP gets the majority and nifty shoots up to 7700 and hits UC …. my CE goes from 30 to say 150 (hypothetically) ….

    now 2 questions

    1) when circuit is active can I sell it??

    2) before the market starts can i put a profit booking order say 100Rs …in a second when it goes beyond that, will the option ger squared off??
